MLK Social Services / Parenting Classes
In June 1976, Milwaukee County Parks and Recreation Department developed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in the heart of the inner-city to address the lack of recreational services available to low-income families. In 1978, New Concept was selected by United Way of Greater Milwaukee to operate the Social Service Department in order to enhance the quality of life for low income residents. This public-private partnership is unique in that community residents are provided social services in the non-threatening environment of a Milwaukee County Parks and Recreational Facility. The MLK Social Services Department has been receiving funding from United Way of Greater Milwaukee for 42 years.
The MLK Social Service Program has two components: Parenting Classes and One-on-One Support. The purpose of this program is to support families through parent education, individual counseling and advocacy. Education about parenting skills, guidance in advocating positively for family needs and awareness of community resources will result in stronger families, with parents that have the resources they need to be able to make healthy, responsible choices about managing their family life independently in the future.
Parenting Classes are designed to assist an individual in acquiring the knowledge they need to be effective in their role as a parent. A part of this is increasing their protective capacity. As a community partner, the Parenting Classes offered through MLK Social Services enabled referents the opportunity to work towards family reunification. The most likely strategy to provide long term solutions to keeping children safe is to educate parents directly through parenting classes and empowering them with tools and information about community resources. The availability of one-on-one support for participants of the parenting classes provides support in times of need and additional opportunity to be engaged in positive communication with the Parent Educator. At the end of the eight (8) sessions, participants are engaged in a teach-back session which enables the instructor to gauge what the parents learned. Participants are provided a certificate of completion and continued support as needed upon completion of the classes.
As of 2016, New Concept began a partnership with Cardinal Capital Management, Inc. to provide supportive services at McKinley Gardens Residences in their Resource Room. MLK Social Service staff is housed at the location, west of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center where New Concept is housed, three days a week.
All Parenting Classes are being held virtually due to Covid-19 at this time. Please call (414) 344-5788 to inquire about enrolling in Parenting Classes.
Thank you for your patience.
