Each One Reach One
Each One Reach One (EORO) Program was established in 1982 on the premise participants would be exposed to positive life options. The program initially provided mentoring services to girls residing in the Hillside Housing Development. The volunteer mentors exposed girls to a variety of career opportunities and cultural activities. For a short period of time, the program was expanded to serve boys to give them positive options and encourage education attainment and career exploration.
EORO currently offers programming in-school and community settings. The Program Coordinator facilitates group session at various schools in Milwaukee County, as well as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center where New Concept is housed. Other sites have been recruited based on needs of partner or collaborating organizations. The EORO Program is designed to prepare girls, ages 12-17, to become self-sufficient adults through weekly group meetings that include homework assistance, career exploration, prevention education, and activities which expose them to the supports they need to achieve their personal goals for the future. As of 2008, based on the recommendation of United Way of Greater Milwaukee, EORO began incorporating the Making Proud Choices Curriculum to enhance the knowledge base of the participants in terms of teen pregnancy prevention, academic success, and refusal skills and reinforce the positive outcomes proposed by the program.
A portion of the group session is designated for homework assistance and answering questions related to academic needs. The Program Coordinator offers participants academic support on an individual basis when necessary. Report cards are requested and meetings with parents/caregivers are scheduled to assure academic and personal goals are achievable. For both in-school and community group sessions, the Program Coordinator implements one-on-one support to assure program goals are met for both New Concept and funding sources. At the current time, United Way of Greater Milwaukee serves as the primary funding source for EORO and has done so since its inception. Additional funding is provided by foundations, private donors, and Milwaukee Public Schools to name a few.
The EORO program is designed as an education enhancement, not an incentive or free time activity in either in-school or community setting.
